Benue: Yelewata IDPs Shut Down Highway, Chant ‘We Want To Go Home’

Heavy traffic gridlock occurred in Yelewata, Benue State, on Wednesday after Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) blocked the main highway, halting the movement of vehicles in and out of the state.

A human rights activist in Benue State, Ukan Kurugh, shared the incident on his official Facebook handle on Wednesday.

He said, “If you’re planning to travel into or out of Benue State, please put your journey on hold for now.

“At Yelewata, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have taken to the major highway, blocking both lanes for several hours, chanting in unison: “We want to go back home!”

According to the post, the protest has left many motorists and passengers stranded, as the displaced people expressed frustration over prolonged displacement and continued attacks from terrorist Fulani herdsmen.

Ukan Kurugh also confirmed the incident to Daily Post in a telephone interview.

He said, “Yes, the protest is still ongoing. The people are protesting that they want to go back to their homes.”

The protesters consisted of men,Yelewata protest.

As of the time of this report, the road remains blocked and the protesters remain on the highway.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on this development.
