The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, 19 Northern States and Abuja have joined the global Christian community in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

A statement issued by its chairman, Rev. John Hayab, said, the news of the Pope’s death is a moment of profound grief for Catholics and Christians around the world, especially the Roman Catholic community in Northern Nigeria in Nigeria as a whole.

“In times of loss, it is important that we come together in unity, prayer, and remembrance.

“The statement said Pope Francis was more than a spiritual leader as he was a symbol of hope, peace, and compassion in an increasingly divided world, saying, “His papal era was marked by remarkable progress, spiritual awakening, and bold reform.

“From the very beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis embraced a vision of the Church that was inclusive, merciful, and grounded in the teachings of Christ”.

Hayab said the Pope brought a unique depth of humility, intellect, and pastoral concern to his leadership, saying that he advocated for the poor, defended the environment, and spoke out for justice in the face of global inequalities.

He added that He reached across religious divides to promote interfaith harmony and was never afraid to challenge systems that oppressed or excluded.

CAN said, “The Roman Catholic Church has played an essential role in the spiritual and social life of many communities in Nigeria. Pope Francis’s influence extended deeply into our local parishes, missions, and schools—touching countless lives through his encouragement of service, dialogue, and faith in action. His teachings and messages resonated far beyond the Vatican, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of Christians everywhere.”

To the Christian community in Northern Nigeria and to Catholics worldwide, Hayab said it is not only a time of mourning but also of reflection and celebration as they remember Pope Francis for his tireless efforts to foster unity among Christian denominations and among different faiths.
