In what will come across as a really tragic development. a Sudanese military plane has crashed.

The plane into a residential neighbourhood in Omdurman, the twin city of Khartoum, killing at least 46 people and injuring 10 others.

The Russian-built Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday evening after taking off from the military’s Wadi Seidna air base. Both military officers and civilians were among the casualties.

The tragedy occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed to have downed a fighter jet in South Darfur amid the ongoing war with the Sudanese army.

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has devastated Sudan, leading to the killing of thousands and displacement of around 12 million people.

Emergency teams transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital following the crash, the health ministry said.

Unnamed military sources quoted by Reuters confirmed that a senior army commander in Khartoum was among those killed.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion as the aircraft went down, damaging several homes, according to AFP. The crash also caused power outages in nearby areas.

The ongoing war has divided Sudan, with the army controlling the north and east while the RSF holds most of Darfur in the west and parts of the south.
