The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, inaugurated a Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency Village at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna on Tuesday, January 21.

The facility, named in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, aims to enhance the training of cadets in tackling current security challenges in Nigeria.

Speaking at the inauguration, Oluyede described the late Lagbaja as a pragmatic and exceptional field officer who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria.

“The village is a place where the right and current scenarios could be painted to the cadets so that they can practice what they will face in the field. Naming the village after our former leader, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja of blessed memory, is quite apt. We are proud of him till eternity,” Oluyede said.

The COAS also inaugurated several other projects, including the Army Wing’s auditorium, a 30-man Corporal and Below quarters, and the Commanding Officer’s residence at the 37 NDA Demonstration Battalion.

Other projects included the groundbreaking of a 500-capacity cadets’ mess, two blocks of classrooms, an administrative block, and a girls’ hostel at the NDA Boarding Secondary School.

Oluyede emphasized that the facilities are designed to improve the learning environment for cadets and enhance the quality of their training.

“These projects underscore the importance of investing in the next generation of military leaders. A conducive learning environment is critical to achieving this,” he stated.

The COAS commended the Commandant of the NDA, Maj.-Gen. John Ochai, for his leadership and dedication to the institution’s transformation.

Maj.-Gen. Ochai highlighted the academy’s commitment to producing sound military officers.

“Knowledge and character make an officer, and if we must prioritize, it has to be character. Without character, you can’t be a good officer. We will sustain the transformational changes and continue to produce future officers for the armed forces,” Ochai said.

The event featured a combat demonstration by the cadets and a simulation of attack and rescue operations by the 37 NDA Demo Battalion, showcasing the practical application of the new training facilities.

Oluyede also toured the academy, inspecting ongoing projects and facilities to ensure alignment with the institution’s mission of excellence in military training.
