The University of Benin is being considered as a centre for the Technical Teachers Training Programme (TTTP) by the Federal Ministry of Education, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Officials from the ministry visited the campus on Thursday to assess its facilities and manpower.

The team lead, Mrs Gbemisola Olaniyan, explained that the visit was to evaluate the institution and its readiness for the successful launch of the programme.

Olaniyan expressed satisfaction with the university’s preparedness and assured the management that the ministry would support the launch and operation of the TTTP.

In his remarks, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, Vice Chancellor of the university, noted that the TTTP aligned with his five-point agenda.

One of his goals, he said, was to make the university a hub for training in technical and allied disciplines, as well as vocations.

Omoregie represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Prof. Christopher Osubor, expressed enthusiasm for the commencement of the programme.

He highlighted that skills such as carpentry, tiling, welding, and bricklaying would be taught in a more systematic way within a conducive environment.

“This will make the beneficiaries more literate, proficient, and marketable beyond their immediate communities,” Omoregie said.

NAN reports that the university is one of the institutions selected to launch the implementation of the technical teachers training programme.

The university’s Faculty of Education, established in 1974, houses several departments, including Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Educational Management, and Educational Foundations.

These departments offer various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in education, which provide a solid foundation for the TTTP.(NAN)
