Four people have been confirmed dead by trees which fell as a result of a thunderstorm in the popular Jattu market in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, following a downpour on Monday.

The chairman of the local council, Marvellous Zibiri, confirmed the death of the persons while speaking to journalists at the market.

It was gathered that during the rainfall, four trees in the market fell at the same time while people took cover under the trees, thereby killing four persons and injuring many others.

Immediate-past deputy governor of Edo State, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, has expressed ‘deep sadness’ over the tragic incident.

Comrade Shaibu hails from the Jattu-Uzairue kingdom in Etsako West Local Government Area of the State.

In a statement he personally signed on Monday, Shaibu expressed his heartfelt condolence to the families and loved of those who lost their lives in the disaster.

“To those injured, I wish you a speedy recovery and may the trauma of this event be eased by the love and support of our community.

“As a son of Jattu-Uzairue Kingdom, I share in your grief and pain. Let us come together to support one another during this difficult time. May our collective strength and solidarity be a comfort to all affected.”

Meanwhile, the remains of the four people have been deposited at the mortuary, while those who sustained injuries were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
