UEFA has given Manchester United until Monday to reach an agreement that would allow them to compete in the Europa League next season.
This is because Sir Jam Ratcliffe, United’s co-owner, owns Nice, which qualified for the same competition.
The Red Devils qualified after winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City, despite placing ninth in the Premier League.
Ratcliffe’s ownership of two other teams, French side Nice and Swiss club Lausanne, puts him in violation of UEFA rules.
According to European football’s regulatory body, the same owner or company cannot have a “decisive influence” over two or more clubs playing in the same competition.
Nice finished fifth in Ligue 1 this season, and because they finished higher than United, the Red Devils may be compelled to play in the Europa Conference League, unless a solution is found.
