The Nigerian Super Eagles have suffered a serious injury setback ahead of their June 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic.
This comes after Nigeria’s first-choice left-back Zaidu Sanusi’s injury was updated by Porto coach Sérgio Conceição over the weekend.
Speaking at the press conference held following Porto’s 2-0 victory against Estrela da Amadora in a Liga Portugal match on Saturday, Conceição had bad news about Sanusi’s injury.
Sanusi, who is set to miss the remainder of the season, was stretchered off the pitch in the first half against the visitors after complaining about his left knee.
“I think it is serious, it comes from a clear foul and that play causes the injury,” Sérgio Conceição said as quoted by A Bola after the game.
“We are having little luck with the refereeing, anyway, it happened… We are sad for Zaidu, I think the season is over for him and we are shaken by this situation, which was to be avoided, as it was a clear foul and we were left without a player for the rest of the time.”
Sanusi will now undergo surgery at a hospital in Porto in the coming days.
