At least, six persons are feared dead in Agbor, Ika South local government area of Delta State following a ghastly motor accident that occurred along the New Benin/Asaba Express road in the area.
The accident which occurred at about 3:00 pm Thursday, involved a heavy duty truck, 18-seater passenger bus and two motorcycles, left several persons injured and, in critical conditions.
While the corpses of the deceased persons were evacuated and deposited at the Central Hospital Mortuary, Agbor, the injured victims as at Press time, were receiving treatments at the Accident/Emergency (A&E) unit of the hospital.
When our Correspondent visited the scene at about 3:15 pm, smpathisers were seen wailing and weeping, just as officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were also seen battling frantically to evacuate some of the deceased who were literally buried by the fallen truck.
An eye witness account told our Correspondent that the truck which was fully loaded with consumables was descending the hills when it lost control at the former Mr. Biggs axis of the road.
“As the driver struggled to control the truck, it crashed into a waiting bus which was parked by the roadside and the driver, scouting for passengers”
Aside the bus, the truck also, crushed two motorcycles just as the operator of one of the motorcycles was crushed beyond recognition” the eye witness account said.
Some of the sympathisers at the scene who were seen weeping over the dead, also, blamed members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for parking illegally at the roadside, scouting for passengers.
They recalled that that particular spot had, in the past, recorded series of accident given the sloppy nature of the axis.
They called on relevant authorities to, as a matter of urgency,do the needful in order to forestall future occurrence.
