Three more commissioners joined the flood of resignations from the Rivers State Executive Council on Friday.
They are Dr. Jacobson Nbina, the Commissioner for Transportation; Dr. Gift Worlu, the Commissioner for Housing; and Austen Ben-Chioma, the Commissioner for the Environment.
Separate letters seen by Punch, delivered to the governor via the Secretary to the State Government, included their resignations.
Nbina and Ben-Chioma served as commissioners in Nyesom Wike’s most recent government as well.
Their resignation came on the heels of the political crisis that has engulfed the state since the bombing of the State House of Assembly on October 29, 2023.
This brings us to nine commissioners we can confirm that have resigned from their appointments.
Nbina, who confirmed his resignation to Punch on Friday via telephone, said, “Yes, I did yesterday (Thursday).”
Asked about the reason for his action, he stated, “The reason is personal to me and my family commitments. I don’t have any issue with the governor. It is very personal.”
Meanwhile, there are reports that their action is preparing the ground for them to officially defect to the All Progressives Congress, though this has not been confirmed.
Speaking to our correspondent on Wednesday, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, had said a formal launch of the new APC in Rivers is scheduled this weekend, saying, “You will see the tsunami that will happen that day.
