The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, has mourned the passing of prominent palace chief in Benin, the Esogban of Benin, Chief David Edebiri.
Fondly addressed and called “the oracle has spoken”, he was renowned for his influence and courage in expressing his opinion on matters of public importance.
In his condolence message he personally signed, the Deputy Governor expressed sadness over the loss of the prominent Benin chief whom he described as a great father.
Shaibu said, “I am deeply saddened by the painful demise of a great father and prominent palace chief of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin.
“He was fearless, bold and highly courageous in speaking truth to power, no matter whose ox was gored.
“Our charismatic Esogban effectively combined his traditional duties with panache and sense of loyalty to the ancient Benin Throne. He stood on the side of the people in the noble quest for building a fair, peaceful and just society.
“He was highly cerebral, intellectually mobile and ardent advocate of the preservation of the common heritage, cultural identity and custom of Edo people.
“His popular pronouncement:”the oracle has spoken”, resonated loudly across the length and breath of Edo State and beyond.
“No doubt, he would be sorely missed by family members, loved ones, friends and associates, particularly the Benin Traditional Council, at this auspicious time when his wise counsel was most needed.
“For me, he has left indelible footprints in the sands of time and his enduring legacies shall remain a source of pride and inspiration to all who crossed his path.
“May the Almighty God and the ancestors of his forebears grant his gentle soul eternal rest. Amen.”
