Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Wednesday, declared the seat for the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State vacant.
This is following the resignation of the former occupant of the seat and erstwhile Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, from the Lower Legislative Chamber.
Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter, which was addressed to the Speaker of the Parliament, was read on Wednesday on the floor of the Green Chamber.
He said he is stepping down as to be able to focus on the task of serving as the Chief of Staff to the President.
Recall that the lawmaker who was only yesterday inaugurated alongside his colleagues and had voted as well for the leadership of the House, was recently appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
With this latest development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conduct a fresh election for the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila is expected to be sworn in as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu any moment from now.
Gbajabiamila had in May confirmed his appointment as President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, while disclosing that he would assume the new role on June 14.
