President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to appoint Senator George Akume, the immediate-past Minister of Special Duties and former Governor of Benue State, as the new Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF).
President Tinubu’s decision is intended to appease the North Central zone ahead of the race for 10th National Assembly leadership.
Members of the North Central zone — where Akume hails from — are dissatisfied with their exclusion from consideration for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
According to a report by the Western Post, Tinubu has chosen Senator Akume, a long-time ally, to be his SGF.
The President is expected to formally announce Senator Akume’s appointment, along with that of other personal aides, between Friday and Monday next week.
Since his inauguration as Nigeria’s 16th President on Monday, many political actors and Nigerians have been anticipating the appointment of personal aides to the President, sparking numerous speculations on social and mainstream media.
President Tinubu was on Thursday reported to have appointed the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, as his Chief of Staff.
Gbajabiamila, on the other hand, neither denied or confirmed the appointment, but urged Nigerians to ‘allow the system to work.’
