A final-year Computer Science student of the privately-owned Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin, in Edo State, Bruno Chigozie Ezeonye has slumped while playing football at the institution’s football pitch.
According to a report by The Nation, the 21-year-old said to be the only son of his parents, died at BIU’s Legacy Campus.
His father, who hails from Anambra, and mother, a South African, are said to be based overseas.
Ezeonye was reportedly rushed to the health centre on campus but referred to Faith Mediplex Hospital on Airport Road, Benin, an affiliate of the faith-based university where he was confirmed dead.
Angry students mobilised to protest after vandalising the university’s health centre and security post but were prevailed upon by top officials of the university.
BIU’s Head of Communication and Brand Strategy Unit, Temi Esonamunjor, told The Nation: “The university will make an official press statement on the true state of things.”
