Supporters of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi in the United States, have protested the results of the February 25, 2023 presidential election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Obi Supporters protesting said they did not want the President Joe Biden led U.S. government to recognise Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared winner by INEC, as Nigeria’s president-elect.

“We in the diaspora are demonstrating to call the attention of the U.S. government and Biden administration not to recognise the winner,” the organisers said.

“The institution (INEC) that conducted the election did not follow the guideline nor the rule of law in accordance with democratic processes.”

According to FIJ report, the United States Department of Interior had given the LP supporters permission to protest at Lafayette Park without obstructing “all sidewalks, walkaways and roadways”. The protesters were also asked to “comply with all reasonable directions of the United States Park Police”.

On Thursday, the LP spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, said that the statement of the Department of State Services (DSS) about certain individuals plotting an interim government was conspiratorial.

He said, “We are going to protect the interest of Nigerians based on provisions of the law, which provides that when you are hurting, you have the right to protest.”
