The federal government, through the National Universities Commission, NUC, has ordered a closure of universities across the country ahead of the 2023 general elections.

There has been calls in some quarters for schools to shut down ahead of the polls to enable students to participate in the general elections taking place February 25 and March 11.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) puts the number of newly registered youth voters at 40%, with at least 26 million said to be students.

In a letter addressed to vice-chancellors of all universities and directors of inter-university centres, obtained by metrowatchxtra, the NUC directed institutions to shut from February 22 to March 14, 2023.

The universities commission noted that the directive was based on the approval of the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.
