As Deltans join other Nigerians to celebrate the nation’s 62nd independence anniversary, the Chairman, Delta State House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri, is optimistic that the country, irrespective of its present challenge, will still experience days of glory.

In an interview with our correspondent in Asaba, Elekeokwuri who is the member representing Ika North East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, averred that at 62, there is the urgent need for the nation to continue to deepen its democracy.

While congratulating Nigerians on the nation’s 62nd independence anniversary, the lawmaker said that though the nation is currently engulfed in a myriad of challenges ranging from insecurity, corruption, hunger, economic doldrums, among others, Nigerians, however, still have a lot to be thankful to God for, adding that God in His infinite mercies has kept the country as one indivisible entity.

He enjoined Nigerians, particularly the youths to continue to keep hope alive as according to him, better days are lurking around.

His words, “At 62, and as a nation, we have cause to be thankful to God and glorify His name.

‘It is true that we may not have arrived where we want to be, but it is also true that we are no longer where we used to be.

“Over the years, a lot has happened. In terms of leadership and governance, we have recorded tremendous improvements both at the local, State and national levels.

“So, I want to congratulate Nigerians and say Kudos to our leaders, our genuine leaders as well as the followers.

“Within these past years, it is true that we have done so much in terms of constitutional reforms, but the greater truth is that there is still the need for us to deepen our democracy; we need to get the people involved more in politics and governance.

“Certainly, not everybody would be involved in active politics, but we should ensure that we continually get ourselves involved in the process of electing credible leaders that would continue to represent us in political matters.

“That way, we would continue to elect leaders with impeccable characters, leaders that have the knowledge and experience to lead us out of the woods” Elekeokwuri posited.
