The Young Progressive Party (YPP) says that the Electoral Bill when signed into law will address several issues including political parties redundancy.
Mr Egbeola Wale-Martins, National Publicity Secretary of the party, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.
Wale-Martins expressed displeasure that political parties had always complained about inability to win elections due to several loopholes and a flawed electoral system.
“Talking about the electoral system, we cannot judge a process or give a categorical outcome on an account of an imperfect system.
“In terms of parties’ participation and vibrancy the electoral system has been our pain because it is flawed.
“But now, it is being amended to allow for electronic transmission of results and to block some of the loops.
“We would see that the two so called parties that are dominant or allegedly assumed to be leading us into a two party system in the country will both die natural deaths.
“Because people will be identifying candidates during elections and not political parties to vote for,” he said.
He said that the perceived thought of the country moving into a two-party system was a sentiment by a few and he did not share in the sentiment.
He noted that the new electoral law was set to address such sentiments and return a more vibrant and credible electoral system for the benefits of democracy.
Wale-Martins urged political stakeholders involved in the amendment of the electoral bill not to relent to ensure that the law came to light.
He expressed optimism that the party’s candidates for the Feb.12, FCT elections would emerge winners.
According to him, YPP is very much in the game for the FCT polls and we have two very strong candidates.
“It is a lady that is contesting for the chairmanship of Bwari Area Council and she’s doing a great job in terms of grassroots mobilisation, and we are likely going to pick something from Bwari,” he said.
