The Academic Staff Union of Universities in Owerri Zone has called on Imo State Government to urgently help Imo State University, which is facing serious challenges.
ASUU said the university’s condition is worsening and needs immediate intervention.
The union urged the state government to implement the 2025 federal agreement with ASUU to save the institution.
The union asked Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is the university’s visitor, to bring management, the Governing Council and ASUU together to find solutions to the problems.
Casual workers at the university earn about 50,000 naira monthly, a situation the union said has led to unethical practices within the institution.
ASUU also noted that the university has not hired new staff for more than 10 years.
The last recruitment was in 2014.
Academic staff numbers have dropped from over 1,000 to about 500 due to people leaving, retiring and dying.
The union called on the state government to ensure the university’s leadership and Governing Council understand the severity of the situation and take action to fix the problems.
