Lagos Govt Postpones Exams over Oro Festival

The decision, announced by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the Lagos State Examinations Board, affects only the examination papers slated for Wednesday, while all other papers will hold on their previously scheduled dates

The Lagos State Government has postponed all Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, papers earlier scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, following the declaration of the Oro Festival in parts of the Ikorodu Division.

The decision, announced by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the Lagos State Examinations Board, affects only the examination papers slated for Wednesday, while all other papers will hold on their previously scheduled dates.

According to the government, the 2026 BECE began successfully on Monday, June 29, 2026, but the examination timetable was adjusted after consultations with relevant stakeholders.

The statement explained that the affected papers have been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

It noted that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect the lives of candidates, examination officials and other stakeholders, while also ensuring the smooth and orderly conduct of the examination without disruption.

“The affected examination papers will now be written on Tuesday, 7th July 2026, while all other examination papers will be conducted on their previously scheduled dates,” the statement said.

The Board expressed regret over any inconvenience the adjustment may cause and appealed to parents, guardians, school administrators, candidates and members of the public for their understanding and cooperation.

Candidates were advised to obtain the revised examination timetable through their respective schools and make adequate preparations for the rescheduled papers.

The Lagos State Examinations Board reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, transparent and hitch-free examinations in line with the educational goals of Lagos State.
