The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, has responded to claims that some police officers have been arresting individuals found in possession of condoms.
Hundeyin was reacting to a video on X in which a lady claimed some men of the police force in Asaba, Delta state arrested a woman after condoms were found on her.
In the viral video, the lady said: ‘’First it was your iphone, then your laptop but in 2026, it is condoms you can be arrested for. A woman was arrested in a restaurant in Asaba for having a condom in her bag. She was beaten by the police officer and held for three days with no food or water. This is not an isolated incident. It is a pattern of extortion that has returned with a vengeance.
When a condom is a probable cause for arrest, no one is safe. We cannot afford to look away because it might be your me next”
Hundeyin while reacting to the video, said the report seems distorted. He called for the victim to come forward so the circumstances surrounding the case can be looked into. He went further to state that a person in possession of an item doesn’t mean he or she was arrested because of the item.
‘’This appears to be a distorted third party narration. Can the ‘victim’ confirm to us the circumstances surrounding the incident? A person was in possession of an item does not automatically mean he was arrested because of the item.
“Let’s hear from the woman herself. We will take it up diligently if this is true.” he wrote
Some Nigerians say they believe the story as they recount how they were arrested for simply having a lighter in their car or pockets.
