OPINION | The Godwin Obaseki Disaster: My Merciless Truth About his 8 Years in Power, By Ikhuenbor Igbinevbo

I am not here to massage egos. I am here to speak the truth exactly as I saw it

This is not courtesy writing.
This is not political diplomacy.
This is my raw, unapologetic, uncensored judgment on Godwin Obaseki’s eight years in power — a period I personally consider one of the most wasted, hostile, deceptive, and emotionally exhausting eras Edo State has endured since 1999.

I am not here to massage egos.
I am here to speak the truth exactly as I saw it.

*A GOVERNOR WHO RULED LIKE EDO PEOPLE DID NOT MATTER*

Obaseki did not just fail — he ruled as though Edo people were a disturbance. He acted like a man irritated by his own citizens, disconnected from the culture, allergic to traditional values, and completely unfamiliar with the basic principles of human management.

His governance style was cold, vindictive, and proudly unfriendly.
He carried himself with an air of untouchable arrogance that separated him from the grassroots he was supposed to serve.

He fought the APC.
He fought the PDP.
He fought political elders.
He fought stakeholders.
He fought ordinary citizens.
He fought his own allies.
He even managed to create tension with the Palace — a cultural sacrilege in itself.

A man who cannot manage people should never have been near power.

*EIGHT YEARS OF TALKING, NO YEARS OF DELIVERING*

Edo State became a graveyard for MOUs — signed today, forgotten tomorrow.
We watched an administration obsessed with press statements and PowerPoint presentations while the people waited for actual results that never came.

In my opinion, his government became a regime of announcements without achievements, promises without performance, and speeches without substance.

Edo people did not elect a seminar speaker.
We wanted governance, not grammar.

*THE MOST INSULTING PART — IMPORTING STRANGERS TO MILK EDO DRY*

This, for me, is the height of the disrespect.

Instead of empowering Edo people — the same people who carried the political burden that put him in office — Obaseki brought in Lagos big boys, Ikoyi Club consultants, and elite strangers to suck the economic blood of the state.

Contracts?
Given to his imported circle.

Consultancies?
Given to outsiders.

Economic benefits?
Evaporated back to Lagos immediately.

They built nothing here.
They left nothing here.
They invested nothing here.

Edo people watched their own economy being controlled by men who saw the state not as a home, but as an ATM.

*AND NOW, AFTER 8 YEARS OF HOSTILITY, SUDDENLY HE IS HUMBLE ABROAD*

Now that power has left his hands, he is suddenly travelling the world — Europe, America, Asia — begging for photo-ops with Edo people abroad.

Now he knows how to smile.
Now he knows how to greet.
Now he knows how to talk gently.
Now he knows how to behave like a human being.

Where was all this humility when he was in Government House?
Where was this character when Edo South cried for attention?
Where was this respect when the palace extended olive branches?
Where was this friendliness when local businesses suffocated?

It is easy to be humble after power has humbled you.

*HIS LEGACY, IN MY VIEW, IS A CATALOGUE OF DECEPTION*

No matter how many foreign flights he boards, he cannot outrun what Edo people already believe:

A trail of questionable investments.
A record full of controversies.
MoUs that died the same day they were signed.
Policies that enriched outsiders and starved locals.
Governance that left no lasting uplift for Edo South.

A legacy that many consider a museum of failed promises and political dishonesty.

*MY MOST BRUTAL TRUTH*

In my personal judgment, Obaseki’s era was an eight-year punishment, not an eight-year administration.

It was an era of:

• Division instead of unity

• Arrogance instead of leadership

• Foreign contractors instead of Edo empowerment

• MOUs instead of development

• Political hostility instead of collaboration

• Governance without human connection

No amount of “meet and greet” in foreign countries can edit the record.
No repackaging can erase eight years of emotional and economic damage.
No new smile can fix the fractures of the past.

This is my voice.
This is my truth.
This is my uncensored, unfiltered, unshakeable verdict.
