Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, greeted Nigerians on the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic administration, assuring them that more democratic dividends will be delivered shortly.

On May 29, 1999, the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar turned over control to Olusegun Obasanjo’s legitimately elected government, following worldwide condemnation of the annulment of the late Moshood Abiola’s June 12, 1993 presidential election.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the speaker’s Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Abbas stated that Nigeria has grown over the last 25 years and that “the dividends of democracy are bound to reach more Nigerians.”

He said this year’s celebration marks a significant epoch in the life of the National Assembly, as it also coincides with the first anniversary of the 10th Assembly.

The 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu.

The statement read in part, “Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. The country has been navigating through the learning curves successfully; though it is not yet, the country has continued to grow in democratic experience and practice.”
