As the three-time African champion Super Eagles enter the field against Sierra Leone at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia on Sunday (today), Jose Peseiro’s position as head coach is in jeopardy.

The conclusion of this month’s match against the Leone Stars will determine Peseiro’s chances of having his one-year contract renewed.

After the Super Eagles’ humiliating 1-0 home loss to Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in March, there were cries for the Portuguese to be fired, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stuck by the former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach.

Nigeria is now in second place in the pool with nine points after four games. Guinea Bissau, who has played five games, is currently in first place after defeating Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles will be present at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cote d’Ivoire in 2019.

In the event that the Super Eagles advance to the 2023 AFCON finals with the intention of winning the tournament, the NFF is anticipated to extend Peseiro’s current one-year contract.

In the rematch, which took place in June of last year, Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen scored both goals as the Eagles overcame Sierra Leone 2-1.

This will be the 18th meeting between both teams, with Nigeria having a better head-to-head record, winning ten, drawing five and losing two.
