A former presidential aspirant, Mr Stanley Osifo, on Monday described President Bola Tinubu as a “great icon of democratic leadership and political engineering” while congratulating him on the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Osifo gave the commendation in statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Osifo, an erstwhile presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), congratulated Tinubu and the newly appointed members of his presidential team.
“You (Tinubu) have been a great icon of democratic leadership and political engineering.
“You have shown bursts of tacit understanding of national issues in the few days you have been in office.
“This is highly commendable. I pray your good plan shall take Nigeria to greater heights in all ramifications of individual, national and international developments,“ Osifo said.
NAN reports that June 12 has been declared as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and a public holiday to mark its political significance to the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, June 10, 2019 signed the Public Holidays Act Amendment Bill into law and declared June 12 as Nigeria’s democracy day instead of May 29.
The day was declared in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola,  the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election who died in detention while being held for alleged treason.
The declaration followed many years of agitation by civil society groups that Abiola should be immortalised. (NAN)
