The Department of State Services (DSS) says Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is currently not in its custody.
Following Emefiele’s suspension on Friday, there were reports that he was arrested by operatives of the secret police.
But in a terse statement on its official Twitter handle on Saturday morning, the DSS said the suspended CBN governor is not in detention.
“Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS,” the secret police tweeted via @OfficialDSSNG.
On Friday, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele from office as CBN governor with immediate effect, “sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”
Emefiele was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.
