Ika nation, comprising Ika South and Ika North East local government areas of Delta State was literally shut down, Saturday as thousands of “Obidient Movement” adherents under the platform of Labour Party engaged in a One Million march for Peter Obi.
The procession which took off from Owa-Alero, the ancestral home of the Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic party (PDP) and Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa in Ika North East, and the popular Emuhun Junction in Ika South, attracted thousands of youths as well as the elderly in the area.
The over eight hour peaceful exercise grounded vehicular movement and commercial activities as the entire stretch of the ever-busy old Lagos/Asaba road witnessed a sea of heads during the period the rally lasted.
Members of the Nigeria police were on ground to ensure that the peaceful rally was not hijacked by unscrupulous individuals to cause mayhem on innocent citizens.
Speaking in an interview with our correspondent, some of the adherents said the mammoth crowd of loyalties for the Peter Obi Movement in the area was an indication that Nigerians are indeed fed up with the administration of the two ruling parties-The All Progressives Congress (APC) at the National and, the People’s Democratic party (PDP) at the State.
One of the participants and a leader of Labour Party in Ika South, comrade Chukwuyem Odia, said that the people of Ika nation are ready to throw their weights behind the Presidential ambition of Mr. Peter Obi.
He said that although their son and brother, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is a vice presidential candidate of the PDP in the forth coming general elections under the platform of the PDP, but that the people are solidly supporting Obi because of his credibility and past antecedents as the only man with the potentiality of redeeming the battered image of the country.
Odia explained that the rally which is coming barely 24 hours after the PDP held theirs in the area with far lower crowd, was another clear indication that the 2023 general elections would not be based on sentiments nor tribal consideration, but on personality and the antecedents of the individual contestants.
